Empowering Families with Young Children to Succeed

Help Me Grow Brighter Futures sponsors monthly educational workshops for parents of children with developmental delays aimed at helping them become better advocates for their children. These workshops address topics such as managing financial resources, organizing medical and developmental records, addressing challenging behaviors, practicing advocacy, and improving family dynamics. Play groups are another important part of HMGBF services. These recreational activities allow the parents to connect, while providing their children with social interaction.

Christine Roll, Family Support Specialist with Help Me Grow Brighter Futures, is grateful for the Brighter Tomorrow Foundation grant that funded educational sessions and social outings this year. She observes firsthand how families strive to find and access the various services that can help their children. Chris says, “Often, parents face a sense of isolation and despair as they try to address their child's needs. Attending the HMGBF educational sessions and recreational activities assures parents that they are not alone. They quickly begin connecting with other families and sharing approaches that are helping them succeed on a day-to-day basis.”

According to Roll, families who have a child with a developmental disability face many additional costs in raising their child. The financial support from BTF provides recreational opportunities for children with developmental disabilities. These parents put a lot of extra effort into looking for opportunities for their child to work on social skills, and participating in recreational activities is difficult due to the financial stress. "This funding allows us to set up opportunities for these children, in many different environments outside of the home, where they are integrated with typically developing children," says Roll.
